Understanding the Skin Barrier
A clear introduction to the protective outer layer of the skin and why gentle care matters.
The outermost layer of the skin is often described as the skin barrier. It helps limit water loss and provides protection from everyday environmental exposures.
Why the barrier matters
When the skin barrier is functioning well, it supports hydration and helps the skin tolerate ordinary contact with the environment. When it becomes disrupted, the skin may feel dry, tight, rough, itchy or irritated.
Everyday factors
Weather, low humidity, frequent washing, hot water and harsh products can contribute to dryness or irritation. Individual skin conditions, allergies, medicines and occupational exposures can also influence how the skin responds.
A measured approach
Gentle routines are often easier to evaluate than frequently changing several products at once. New or persistent irritation deserves attention, particularly when it is painful, widespread, worsening or associated with cracking or signs of infection.
General skin-care information cannot determine the cause of an individual concern. A qualified healthcare professional can assess the skin and recommend care suited to the person.
